Description

The Fogarty Global Health Fellowship Program replaces the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars & Fellows Program, representing new opportunities in global health research training. The Global Health Fellowship Program is one-year clinical research training program for pre- and postdoctoral candidates, sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Fellows train in an 11-month intensive, hands-on research program at one of our affiliated international training sites. VECD’s highly experienced global health mentors work together to mentor fellows in numerous US and LMIC partner institutions, selected as diverse, well-funded research sites in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The VECD Global Health Consortium represents 115 faculty members from our four US Universities and international collaborating institutions who serve as potential mentors for fellows. These faculty members represent expertise in infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, cancer, nutrition, diabetes/metabolic diseases, cardiology, mental health, women and MCH, pediatrics, substance abuse, ophthalmology, dental/oral health, surgery, trauma, burn, anesthesiology, health systems /implementation science, behavioral/social sciences, nursing, neurology/stroke, lung diseases, & genetics.

Descriptions of training sites and opportunities can be found at www.vecd.org.

Purpose of the Fellowship

The purpose of this program is to support an 11-month mentored research fellowship for clinical investigators studying diseases and conditions in developing countries and to build international health research capacity.
Funding is available for clinical research related to but not limited to the following topics:

  • • HIV/AIDS, including STDs, tuberculosis, opportunistic infections, opportunistic malignancies, or behavioral research including substance (drug and/or alcohol) use.
  • • Cancer, including oncology, radiation therapy, pathophysiology, and other cancer-related issues, including but not limited to HIV-related cancers.
  • • Diseases of the heart, vessels, lungs, and blood, including blood resources, diabetes and metabolic diseases.
  • • Mental disorders, including basic, clinical, and translational research to advance understanding of causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Application Procedure

Selection Process

Applications must be submitted online as instructed below. The VECD Consortium conducts a review of all proposals and makes awards, following guidelines of the NIH Center for Scientific Review. The Principal Investigator of the Consortium serves as the administrator for these reviews but does not vote on any proposal.

Applicants can expect to be notified of their status in January. The VECD Consortium has limited fellowship positions, however program alternates may be accepted later in the year if additional funding becomes available.

Based on the information you have provided, it seems you may not be eligible for this fellowship, which is for:

a. Postdoctoral trainees
b. Advanced doctoral students currently enrolled in health-related doctoral programs. Persons in health-related disciplines (human or animal) such as medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, veterinary medicine, nutrition science, pharmacy, optometry, and others are invited to apply. Ph.D. students should have completed their Master’s-level coursework, and professional doctoral degree candidates should have completed their basic science courses and one year of clinical training.

However, we encourage you to continue your search!

Hi Damtew!
Scholarships for medicine/nursin g/professional degrees (university type scholarships that is) are pretty rare. There are, however, NGO/government funded scholarships that target those. You need to be very convincing in your application - how important is it that you get the scholarship? are professionals with that particular specializations rare in your country? etc... etc.... Using our search engine, you can look for scholarships that
fit your specific profile. Remember to make your search as broad as
possible. What this means is limit your criteria to 2 or 3 if your initial search yield not much results. Here is the address of our search engine: www.helpforafricanstudents.org /.../once you locate one or more scholarships that suits your needs, feel
free to ask us for advice/support on the application steps (CV, letter of motivation etc....) Make sure you read this article over and over: helpforafricanstudents.org/... /...
