Description

Bonamy Dobrée, Professor of English at Leeds 1936-55, is today best known for his work on Restoration and eighteenth-century literature, and for a notable study of Kipling. From the 1920s as a journalist, theatre critic and literary scholar, he was on the fringes of the Bloomsbury group, a close friend of T. S. Eliot, Leonard Woolf, and Herbert Read. At Leeds he is remembered as a supportive teacher and mentor, and his papers now in the Brotherton Library have proved a valuable resource for scholars.

The Dobrée scholarship will cover the fees of the successful candidate. The award is for a maximum of 3 years (full-time) on condition of satisfactory progress (reviewed at the end of the first academic year).

The Bonamy Dobree Scholarship will be available for an international student for study in the School of English from October 2012. The award will cover the full cost of academic fees.
