Description

With an endowment of approximately 1.7 billion euros, the German Federal Foundation for the Environment (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) is one of the largest foundations in Europe. Besides sponsoring projects, the DBU also awards scholarships to support young scientists. Entitled to apply are highly qualified young scientists who work on research subjects with a clear relation to current environmental issues and contribute to solving these issues through their work. 60 doctoral scholarships are awarded every year. Foreign applicants must demonstrate, among other things, a good command of German. The scholarship amount is 940 euros a month, and is paid for a maximum of three years. In addition to the grant, a monthly allowance of 210 euros is paid for material and travel expenses. Further funds can be granted on application.

Number of Scholarships: 60

Duration
These doctoral scholarships are limited to a maximum of three years. Doctorates that are already underway at the time of application will not be sponsored.

Scholarship Value
The scholarships amount to 940.00 EUR per month. A monthly allowance of 210.00 EUR for material and travel expenses will be paid in addition to the scholarship. Further material cost funds can only be granted in exceptional cases. If this is desired, a detailed and complete cost schedule must be submitted with the scholarship application. A child bonus is granted to scholarship holders with children whose net family income does not exceed 2,000.00 EUR per month. An additional monthly allowance of 200.00 EUR per child is granted. The child bonus amounts to 200.00 EUR for the first child and another 150.00 EUR for the second and every further child. Instead of the child allowance, scholarship holders with children can choose to have their scholarship terms extended by up to six months. Scholarship holders who must look after children can apply in special cases (e.g. the period after birth, or child sickness) for family leave, during which the DBU scholarship is suspended. This family leave is limited to no more than 12 months per child.

Eligibility

Target Group
Eligible to apply are graduates of higher education institutions with above average examination results up to a maximum age of 28. Sponsorship is offered for research projects in the field of environmental protection. This applies to projects in all scientific disciplines, insofar as they are of high current relevance and contribute to solving problems in environmental protection and conservation. Particularly welcome are interdisciplinary topics that support sustainable development.

Academic Requirements
Scientists entitled to participate in doctoral studies and with above-average degree (overall grade good or very good; Law: at least fully satisfactory).

Application Requirements

    * Work on the thesis may not have been commenced yet.

    * Incomplete or late (received after the closing date) applications cannot be considered.

    * Subjects with international significance are welcome; most of the work on the project has to however be completed in Germany and there has to be a clear relation to the environmental situation in Germany.

    * Applicants from abroad are expected to have a good command of German to allow integration in the network of DBU scholarship holders.

    * In addition to an above-average degree, the subject selected for the thesis should be very topical and suitable for contributing to the resolution of environmental protection and nature conservation issues.

    * In general, all environmental research topics compliant with the criteria specified above are acceptable, i.e. applications in the field of Social Sciences, the Humanities, Economics and Law in addition to the Natural and Engineering Sciences. Interdisciplinary topics in support of a sustainable development are particularly welcome.

    * The complexity of environmental problems calls for an interdisciplinary cooperation of various scientific disciplines. The aim of the scholarship programme of the DBU is therefore to support young scientists from different fields to work on a great variety of environmental topics. In view of this desired diversity of topics, the DBU expects no more than one application to be submitted per work group or academic supervisor per application round.

    * The DBU attaches great value to a comprehensible work and time schedule, which, in conjunction with the academic supervisor's statement of opinion, makes clear that the work can be completed within a period of within 3 years.

    * Institutional support is not possible; concentration of topics in a broader subject complex (bundling of individual applications) without prior consultation of the DBU is also not permitted.

    * After rejection of an application for scholarship, applicants cannot submit a new application.

Application Procedure

Applicants need to register online at www.dbu.de/384.html. The application can then be registered online.
