How to apply for scholarships? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. Damaris Foping
Sunday, 11 September 2011 11:06

imagesMThink about it a minute; to want to get a scholarship is to want your application be selected from a pile of hundreds/thousands of others.

Therefore, before you drop your application in the mail box, ask yourself this fundamental question: have I presented/provided enough reasons for the jury to select my application?  To be one’s own judge always helps. It is also crucial that you know exactly what the jury expects in order to better present yourself as the ideal candidate.

“Preparing competitive scholarship applications is truly an art”

Be sure you look online to order many of your belongings. Additionally, make yourself aware
of your state's landlord-tenant laws to know your rights when it comes to maintenance responsibilities.

A good rule of thumb is that you should leave your apartment home as you found it.

Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?

I think that what you said was very logical. But, think
on this, suppose you added a little content? I ain't saying your content is not good, but suppose you added
something that makes people want more? I mean How to apply for scholarships?
is a little boring. You should glance at Yahoo's home page and note how they create article headlines to grab viewers to open the links.
You might add a video or a picture or two to get people
excited about what you've got to say. Just my opinion, it would bring
your posts a little bit more interesting.

Bonjour Madame, Monsieur,

Bonsoir Madame/Monsieur
mon E-mail:
Merci, cordialement !

Hi Dexter,
Using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that
fit your specific profile. Remember to make your search as broad as
possible. What this means is limit your criteria to 2 or 3 if your initial search yield not much results. Here is the address of our search engine: www.helpforafricanstudents.org /.../ once you locate one or more scholarships that suits your needs, feel
free to ask us for advice/support on the application steps (CV, letter
of motivation etc....)
Be sure you read this article over and over: helpforafricanstudents.org/... /...
Here is something I highly recommend:
helpforafricanstudents.org/... /...

I saw your sticky note about community volunteering being an addition to my CV. I was wandering if working as a Save the Children volunteer qualifies for an academic scholarship or is it purely based on grades. If not, what kind of community work helps my CV when looking for an academic (not a philanthropic, NGO) scholarship?

Hell,
My name is NCHUTEZOH ALAIN NGUMI-AKWE and I am here to tell you why I need this scholarship you are awarding. My father passed away when I was five and even before that he saw the light in me. After he passed away, due to repugnant traditions, my mother and I were sent away and that did not stop her. She worked hard and even went deep into debts to see me through school. I am a Cameroonian and I have seen our situation as concerns the health of our citizens. There are about 11000 patients per doctor and that has led to despicable mistakes caused by fatigue. I lost my father to this kind of mistake because he was poisoned and when he was taken to the hospital, sufficient medical care was not awarded to him. I want to change that situation in my country. I have tried getting into our medical schools in Cameroon but it seems as if nothing is going my way, it seems if you are not part of a wealthy family, you cannot make it. I have been accepted in to the All saints university in Common Wealth Dominica and my main obstacle is finance. I believe this is the opportunity that I have been looking for and it is about to pass me by. The first semester is due to begin on the 06 of January and I do not think that I will be able to have that kind of money. Please, I am calling on you to look into my situation and help me.

Note that women, especially those of developing nations, have the biggest chance of obtaining a scholarship. Your chances are even greater when you have good grades. Note that when dealing with government/NGO scholarships, having a great plan to impart serious changes in your community/count ry after your graduation can also increase your chances tremendously. There are a number of scholarships on our website for women. Try checking the 'scholarships for women' box on the search engine and leaving all the other criteria blank.
We wish you the best!

Hello, Yohannes!
Many governmental/NG O scholarships target students looking to get PhD’s abroad, and universities around the world rely heavily on PhD students to carry out various research projects. As a consequence, research assistantship positions become available every day in universities across Europe, America, and Asia. It is important to note that many of these opportunities are never published over the internet, so the best way to go about it is to prepare a nice CV and cover letter and start visiting the websites of universities in your targeted field and country. Look for openings and collect the emails of faculty whose research interests coincide with yours. Then send them an email—many reply, you know, and if you have done great things research–wise in the past you can get lucky; what is more, there is little to no competition at times.
How do you find faculty more likely to hire? Those with NIH grant money are listed here: projectreporter.nih.gov/.../

When you have a heart to help your country, government scholarships are a great way to go. In your application be convincing: why should they give the scholarship to you and not another student? are professionals in your field desperately needed in your country? if so why? can your country train such a professional? (If not, they are more likely to sponsor you abroad).
Best wishes!

Dear Njantan,
Please follow the advice we often give students: start by making sure that your choice of your future program is well-planned. Do you have a career plan? Is the demand high for professionals with the degree you are after? Have you met with some faculty/profess ionals to investigate whether you are currently on the right path? Is there something better you qualify for?
I highly recommend that you pay special attention to our newsletters for they are loaded with advice.

As for funding opportunities, using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that
fit your specific profile. Remember to make your search as broad as
possible. What this means is limit your criteria to 1, 2 or 3 if your initial search does not yield many results. Here is the address of our search engine: www.helpforafricanstudents.org /.../ once you locate one or more scholarships that suit your needs, feel

Congratulations on your admission to an American university! In terms of funding,
You have several options:
• 1
Contacting the international student office of the university for assistance

Contacting the graduate student office of the university for assistance - requesting permission to do a part-time job for instance

Since your grades are not A's and B's, I would encourage you to look for NGO/government sponsored scholarships and focus on planning what you can do to help your country with your engineer skills (this will attract NGO/government type scholarships, whereas university-spon sored scholarships are looking for competitive grades).
Best wishes!

A governmental scholarship will be great for you. They offer the most money and often cover all fields.
When you have at heart to help your country, government scholarships are a great way to go. In your application be convincing: why should they give the scholarship to you and not another student? are professionals in your field desperately needed in your country? if so why? can your country trained such professional? (I hope no)

We from the developing countries are most grateful for your help. Giving us hope of something better in future. My country has faced civil war in the recent past, thanks to our selfish leaders. Unfortunately, we did not seem to learn from this. I feel the need to do something to educate the electorate on the importance of choosing worthwhile leaders So this does not happen again. I got an exciting opportunity to attend a conference in Europe. All i need is airfare. The moment I come back, everyone in my community will have to learn why leaders are important. I hope I get to achieve this.

In terms of funding,

Note that women, especially those of developing nations, have the biggest chance of obtaining a scholarship. Your chances are even greater when you have good grades. Note that when dealing with government/NGO scholarships, having a great plan to impart serious changes in your community/count ry after your graduation can also increase your chances tremendously. There are a number of scholarships on our website for women. Try checking the 'scholarships for women' box on the search engine and leaving all the other criteria blank.
We wish you the best!

Dear Thulha,
Wow--sounds like a great project. Then send them an email—many reply, you know, and if you have done great things research–wise in the pass you can get lucky; what is more, there is little to no competition at times.
How do you find faculty more likely to hire? Those with NIH grant money are listed here: projectreporter.nih.gov/.../
Another option is our search engine: www.helpforafricanstudents.org /.../
Good luck!

Hello there Olumide!
I would encourage you to focus on WHAT you want to study rather than WHERE you want to study it.
I highly recommend that you pay special attention to our newsletters for they are loaded with advice.

As for funding opportunities, using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that

Dear Kevin,
Please follow the advice we often give students: start by making sure that your choice of your future program is well-planned. Do you have a career plan? Is the demand high for professionals with the degree you are after? Have you met with some faculty/profess ionals to investigate whether you are currently on the right path? Is there something better you qualify for?
I highly recommend that you pay special attention to our newsletters for they are loaded with advice.

Hello,
I commend your efforts on guiding youths to achieving their career visions.

I recently completed my Msc, industrial sociology from one of the most prestigious universities in Nigeria (University Of Ibadan).

However, i wish to pursue a career in academics by going for my Phd in either Netherlands or Canada. I would really appreciate if you can support my dream by sending some links to my email address. I would of my own accord continue the search for possible scholarships in these countries, or any other country.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Yours'
Victoria.

Hello, Victoria,
Thanks for your kind words! You sound like a very impressive candidate for a scholarship.
Good luck!

Dear Jamilah,
Wow! A single mother with thre echildren and pursuing a degree? Impressive!
Unfortunately, scholarships for medicine/nursin g/professional degrees (university type scholarships, that is) tend to be rare. However, the GOOD news is that NGO/government funded scholarships do target professional degrees. You need to be very convincing in your application - how important is it that you get the scholarship? are professionals with that particular specializations rare in your country etc... etc....Using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that

Dear Nsimbe,
Please follow the advice we often give students: start by making sure that your choice of your future program is well-planned.

Here is the address of our search engine: www.helpforafricanstudents.org /.../ once you locate one or more scholarships that suit your needs, feel
free to ask us for advice/support on the application steps (CV, letter
of motivation etc....)

Hello there!
Unfortunately, scholarships for medicine/nursin g/professional degrees (university type scholarships, that is) tend to be rare. However, the GOOD news is that NGO/government funded scholarships do target professional degrees. You need to be very convincing in your application - how important is it that you get the scholarship? are professionals with that particular specializations rare in your country etc... etc....Using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that
fit your specific profile. Remember to make your search as broad as

Congratulations on your enrollment at Accra Institute of Technology.
In terms of funding,
You have several options:
• 1
Contacting the international student office of the university for assistance
• 2
Contacting the graduate student office of the university for assistance - requesting permission to do a part-time job for instance

hi , i am salmine a tunisian student , i would love to have this scholarship,
i think i have what it takes to be one of the best students. Ever since i was a kid i always wanted to do something important , i've always tried to read stuff , watch documentaries , try to undersatnd evrything arround me , and when my parents talk about something i write down what they say and i go search for it on internet so i can undersatnd what they're talking about. in school teachers always tell me to keep my thoughts for myself they found my ideas a bit odd , but with time i managed to make people get me and understand me so now people ask my opinion about stuff , but there is one and only problem is that in my country Tunisia people like me will never have the opportunity to shine and to show our talent. i know in my deep guts that one day i will be abale to achieve my goal because i am so smart , educated patinent and well cultured . i had lots of ups and downs in my life but nothing made me give up , i've always tried to be the best to be the center of attention . Finally i need to go to colllege so that i can continue to grow up and extend my knowledge and to be capable of giving back to the community, capable of being an example to others . i hope i get this scholarship i know that there are lots of people applying but i know that i'm one of the few who deserve it . i hope you give me the opportunity to be GREAT.

In your application be convincing: why should they give the scholarship to you and not another student? are professionals in your field desperately needed in your country? if so why? can your country train such a professional? Hello Seth

There are several organizations that fund studies in Africa; the ananda foundation is one of them there are several more I sure

Dear Aloys,
I would encourage you to explore the websites of Swedish universities and apply to the programs that best suit you. In terms of funding, I would encourage you to first try…
• 1
Contacting the international student office of the university for assistance
• 2
Contacting the graduate student office of the university for assistance - requesting permission to do a part-time job for instance
• 3
In addition, using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that
fit your specific profile. Remember to make your search as broad as
possible. What this means is limit your criteria to 1, 2 or 3 if your initial search does not yield many results. I would not limit your search to Sweden unless that is absolutely essential. Here is the address of our search engine: www.helpforafricanstudents.org /.../

Please follow the advice we often give students: start by making sure that your choice of your future Program is very well plan. Do you have a career plan? is the demand high for professional with the degree you are after? Have you met with some faculty/profess ional to investigate whether you are currently on the right path? Is there something better you qualify for? Do you have a career plan?....
I highly recommend that you pay special attention to our newsletters for they are loaded with advice.

Speaking of education, always remember that there is no bigger mistake than starting a program without knowing where it fits in a career plan. Make sure you do have a career plan. Why do you want that other degree? Which position are you targeting? what is the demand for that type of professional in your country/abroad? do you know what other things will give you and edge once you hit the job market? etc... etc...

Very sorry to hear about that. Wish I had the perfect solution at hand right now; I can guarantee one thing though, I will keep you guys in mind. A word of encouragement - dropping out of high school do not condemn someone to failing in life. Lot's of very successful people are high school dropouts. There are nonprofits out there that are better qualify to deal with this type of issue that us; an example is one of our partners: exitpoverty.org/.../...

Hey laurence

Well, scholarships for medicine/nursin g/professional degrees(univers ity type scholarships that is) are pretty rare. You however have NGO/government funded scholarships target those. You need to be very convincing in your application - how important is it that you get the scholarship? are professionals with that particular specializations rare in your country etc... etc....Using the search engine, you can look for scholarships that
